Class Info

This introductory course will teach you the basics of Coptic style bookbinding, no previous experience needed. We'll provide some basic information on the nuances of bookbinding, as well as accessible tools you can use at home to continue your learning. Then, you'll learn how to fold and stitch your very own softcover journal to take home at the end of the class.

If you get thirsty, The Booj will be working at the UAC's The Nest, serving amazing coffee and mocktails. You'll be welcome to grab a drink to bring back to the class area, and feel free to bring your own snacks!

Class Materials

All tools and materials to create your journal will be provided. You'll be able to choose from blank, lined, or dot grid pages to fill your journal. At the end of the class you'll be able to use artisan papers from our collection to collage the cover of your journal before taking it home with you.

Paper Details

Artisan Papers: We use a variety of different papers in our work. Many of them are handmade in different regions of the world. Each sheet of paper is made like a piece of art, and carries with it generations of papermaking knowledge. Find out more about our artisan papers here.

Cardstock: Our cardstocks are all light-weight and acid-free. We use a variety of textures, but mostly smooth for use in our journals.

Journal Pages: Our default paper for journals is Canson Universal Sketch paper. It's best for dry media like pencil, pens, and charcoal. It's natural white, acid-free, has excellent erasability and is smudge resistant. Other specialty papers are sometimes used, and are detailed in the item description.

So interesting!

I almost made the title "Sew interesting!" but then I would have had to show myself out.

Seriously, this was a wonderful class. I am a very fumble-fingered sewer, but despite my clumsiness I still greatly enjoyed the experience and left the class with an only slightly dog-eared journal that makes me smile every time I look at it. I don’t get into flow as often as I’d like, so having three hours blur by while I tried something new and interesting was wonderful, and I’m very grateful for the experience. I highly recommend this course - it was unique and satisfying.
